My Story: From Burnout to Bliss

Burnout first showed up in my life while I was working as an emergency doctor, pushing for perfection, crumbling and overwhelmed by anxiety—while doing everything I could to ignore how rotten I felt.
But when my body responded by developing a tremor, I had no choice but to stop.
I knew I could never be the “great” doctor I was striving so hard to become if my hand shook every time I got stressed. In desperation, I tried meditation and energy healing—two modalities I’d scorned throughout my conventional medicine career—and, to my surprise, they saved my life.
So, I bounced back. I started my own practice as a holistic general practitioner and was overjoyed to help patients heal naturally by tapping into functional medicine and the mind-body connection.
But just a few years later, those familiar feelings of burnout started to creep back in again.
This time, I was running my practice, raising my young son while pregnant with my second, buying and renovating a house with my family, slogging through most days feeling out of balance, and falling into the “busyness” model of the world. And then my son got sick.
We tried all the functional medicine testing, diets, and supplements—and nothing seemed to work. As a doctor, I felt powerless to help him. As a mum, I felt guilty for somehow allowing this to happen.
It was the hardest time of my life for all the reasons you can imagine. But this time, I didn’t fall apart. I didn’t give up my career or take time off from “normal” life.
Because I realised, finally, that the answers were already within me.
I started focusing on my own meditation, mindset, and self-care rhythms and doing the inner work I needed to show up as a calm, present mummy for him. And not only did I break out of my burnout cycle, but I saw his little body begin to heal.
At times, we all face out-of-control circumstances that can leave us feeling stuck.
But I’m a living, breathing example of how choosing to overcome burnout can not only save your life—it can also have a positive, healing impact on the people you love most.
